  1. Fiji was a British colony from 1874 til 1970.  Political polarization is a result
  2. of the different cultural groups of Fiji (Indians, native Fijians).  The strong
  3. economy is from the discovery of copper and sugar production.  A military
  4. coup overthrew the government in 1987.  The result was that Lt. Col. Sitiveni
  5. Rabuka, the coup's leader, got increased power in a compromise.
